Berlin, Germany – June 25th, 2009 – Linux Fund is pleased to announce that the BSD Fund Visa is available for application by US residents today at bsdfund.org. A percentage of every purchase made with the BSD Fund Visa card goes to events, software development and other initiatives related to the "Berkeley Software Distribution" family of operating systems. The BSD Fund Visa is also available as a student card. BSD Fund has provided financial support to BSD-related events around the world and is key supporter of the Portable C Compiler Project.

"I am delighted to see the BSD Fund Visa become a reality and look forward to the important events and software it will support. BSD Software is everywhere but rarely gets the attention it deserves." said Michael Dexter, BSD Fund Program Manager

"The launch of the BSD Fund Visa confirms that we are on the right track and are successfully reaching out to the broader open source software community." said David Mandel, BSD Fund Executive Director

About BSD

The Berkeley Software Distribution family of operating systems and related utilities were born out of a research partnership between the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the University of California, Berkley Computer Science Research Group (CSRG). This pioneering research between 1977 and 1995 was transferred to the global Internet community for continued development and has produced de facto software that has been used in virtually every computer operating system including Microsoft Windows. BSD software has also powered the Internet from day one.

The Berkeley Software Distribution is also known for its permissive copyright which permits the duplication and modification of the software with few restrictions. The family of "BSD" software licenses that have evolved out of this work are appreciated for their simplicity and wide commercial and non-commercial applicability.
